People want to work that’s engaging, that’s challenging, where they have some control over what they do with some discretion, some variety, where they feel like they’re learning on the job.Īnd most important, people want to do work that has meaning. It’s not even the most important reason why they work. The whole point of my book is to suggest that while of course, people work for pay, that’s not the only reason why they work. So you can organize work in the most efficient, degrading, meaningless way possible and it really won’t matter because people work for pay. People work for pay, and that’s all there is to it. If you don’t pay them, it doesn’t matter what they do. If you pay them, it doesn’t matter what they do. Well, the standard view is that people work for pay. I want to start things off with what seems like a simple question, but as you say, the answer is quite surprising, urgent and complex.
